Digestive Enzymes (including Alpha-Galactosidase)

Evidence tier: Emerging

What it is: A blend of enzymes that break proteins, fats, lactose, and complex carbohydrates into smaller units the gut can absorb. Alpha-galactosidase is the enzyme that breaks down the fermentable carbohydrates in beans and some vegetables.

What the research shows: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in healthy volunteers eating a large bean-based test meal found that alpha-galactosidase taken with the meal reduced intestinal gas production and the severity of gas after eating. The study was very small (8 participants) and tested one enzyme, not a multi-enzyme blend, which is why the tier is "emerging."

Typical study dose: Up to 1,200 GalU of alpha-galactosidase taken with a single test meal in the cited study. This describes what the study used, not a recommended amount. This formula supplies a 400 mg enzyme blend per capsule; the label does not list the activity of each enzyme, so it cannot be compared directly to the amount studied.
