What the research says

Maca Root (Lepidium meyenii)

Evidence tier: Moderate

What it is: A root vegetable native to the Andes, traditionally used as a food and taken as a supplement for energy, mood, and sexual wellness.

What the research shows: A randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study of postmenopausal women found that maca was associated with improvements in psychological symptoms and measures of sexual function, and the effect was not related to estrogen or androgen content in the maca itself. The evidence is real and specific to postmenopausal women, but still limited to a handful of relatively small trials.

Typical study dose: 3.5 g/day of powdered maca for 6 weeks (crossover design against placebo, 12 weeks total) in the cited trial. This describes what the study used, not a recommended amount.
