What the research says

Irish Moss (Chondrus crispus)

Evidence tier: Limited

What it is: A red seaweed traditionally eaten in the Caribbean and Ireland. It naturally contains iodine, trace minerals, and soluble fibers.

What the research shows: Sea moss has a long history of traditional use, but it has not yet been tested in well-designed human trials. The best available evidence is preclinical: in a 21-day feeding study in rats, a diet supplemented with cultivated Chondrus crispus increased beneficial gut bacteria and short-chain fatty acids, which the researchers described as prebiotic effects. Animal findings do not always carry over to people, which is why this tier is "limited."

Typical study dose: 0.5% to 2.5% of the diet by dry weight for 21 days in the cited animal study. This describes what the study used, not a recommended amount, and it cannot be translated directly to a human serving. This formula supplies Irish moss, bladderwrack, and burdock root (1,400 mg combined) with 5 mg of black pepper extract per two-capsule serving.
